I had seen the woman with the duck before, but the one with the Napoleon hat was new to me.
I had this awkward feeling of familiarity. This corner of the Internet where people take their metaphors to a whole new level.
A Small Nation. This is where creating digital homes is not like building a nation. It actually is. You may even dress up if you want to.
Fluent Self. You know. Havi has a crew of Pirates! because she doesn’t like running a business team:
“I figured out what I don’t like about having a ‘team’.
It has all these little associated bits under the surface that just bug me. Sports analogies, for one.
Also it just kind of smacks of corporate horribleness. You know, those awful, embarrassing team-building exercises that you read about in business books.”
Shrinkonia. You know too.
My map says this part of the internet is called Oddball Empire.
“We tell ourselves stories to make sense of our world. By immersion in fun metaphors we can get to the more authentic stories. Circumventing ugly associations we might have with more traditional stories. Avoiding telling the same story we tell ourselves for years over and over again. Revealing our world as we never encountered it before. And it’s also fun.” I read this in my guide book about this obsession with capes and pirates in Oddball Empire.
If this is true, I might be longer here than expected. Remember back in the days when I was whining and yapping about The Big Adventure?
“If you are bored or intimidated by “Project Management”, if the thought of it makes you go “waaaaaaahhhh”, why not think about your project as a Big Adventure …”
Seems pretty Oddball Empire to me.
Occurs to me that I think about our across-the-planet friendship–you, Simone, Daniel, and I + others we pick up along the way–as the Big Adventure, and our projects as mini-big adventures within the bigger one.
Where does that place me in the Oddball Empire? Do I get a special hat?
